1/11/24-Photography J-Term, Day 3

 By: Kamilla Spencer

After our daily photography inspiration presentations, we spent the morning conducting individualresearch projects. These focused on famous photographers with different styles, backgrounds, and ages.I chose to learn about Jewish-Hungarian photographer Robert Capa. Some of the other options were,Lebanese-American photographer Rania Matar and Indian photographer Ragu Rai. Our research brieflycovered their lives, most prominent works, and a reflection of our learnings.

In the afternoon we took the knowledge and ideas we gained from our research and set off to theMuseum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH). The photography exhibit we planned to go to was unfortunatelyclosed, but the group still enjoyed taking images of the fascinating architecture and imaginative art in theKinder exhibition.

We ended the day with a stop at the nearby Methodist church, St Paul’s. Here, we took our final images for the day and once satisfied, headed back to school.

Reflection:

Day 3 was more relaxing than the previous two, but I enjoyed the freedom to experiment with the newtechniques I noticed while researching Robert Capa's work. His images contain large array of war photography from around the world. Throughout my exploration of his photography, I observed how his use of motion to showed the intensity and mood of the moment. This led me to take my own pictures of movement later on in the day. My two favorites were taking long exposure images of people walking in the bustling halls of the MFAH, resulting in blurry snake-like figures, and capturing the water droplets bursting from the local drinking fountain. My goal for the following week is to combine movement, shifts in perspective, and shadows to create more intricate and dramatic photographs.
