Art of Photography Day 7: Finishing projects

By: Ambika and Eli S.

Ambika - First half of the day
This morning we started off with Inspo of the Day where students choose either a photographer or a type of photography to present to the class. Today's Inspo of the Day is with Eli S and Yazzie. Eli presented on macro photography and taught us about the tools we can use to be able to do macro photography. He taught us that macro photography is where you take small items, and make them bigger than what they actually are. After Eli finished presenting, we worked on our individual projects. For the individual project, we chose a mood to convey in the project. Just before lunch, Yazzie presented her Inspo of the Day. She presented on neon surrealism and spoke about how she got the idea and where she found the photographer. She also explained to us about what it is.

Eli - Afternoon

We started the afternoon by presenting our individual projects. For our individual projects, each student made their own photo collage conveying a mood, theme, or story. For example, I made a collage that focused on images that capture everyday life. Using similar elements to street photography. After everyone presented we started working on our group project. For our group project, we decided to make a banner that spelled out Post Oak using images of objects that started with each letter of Post Oak. Students were assigned their own letter at the beginning of each week, my letter was K and I decided to take pictures of keys, and piano keys. We started constructing our final project by first, delegating each part of the project to groups of students: gluing the pictures to their black backgrounds, hole punching and tying them to the green twine, and hanging them up on the wall. After the final banner was hung up we ended our final day of J term.

Student Reflections:

Ambika: Today was nice to have a day to finish all the projects. While I was finishing mine, I thought it was nice to have a project where we were able to express a feeling while taking photos. I especially love how we have a lot of freedom to explore different types of photography and learn how we can use those techniques throughout this course and later in life. Although we were working on projects, I felt engaged by seeing my peer's works and seeing the way they expressed their photos on their collage board. At the end of this J-Term, I feel like I have learned a lot, and that I really enjoyed it!

Eli: This afternoon went by so quickly. After we presented our individual projects we started to work on our group project. Me and Owen worked to glue all of the photos to their black backgrounds. All of us worked fast and diligently to complete the banner and hang it up in the commons next to Mr. Dorsey's office. It was a great way to finish off a great J term.
